She folds her arms across her chest. Short, but fiery. Me, I’m the tall, easygoing Dog. I crack the jokes; Clary cracks heads. That’s normally how our partnership works. Right now, Clary is determined. She will argue. I wonder if pretending to be tired will get me out of another argument.
No. She’ll see right through me.
“Congratulations,” I say. Thundercloud Clary glares at me.
I wonder if I’m better off pretending to sleep anyway. Healer Larkin said I need more rest.
“I don’t need sarden charity, Mattes,” Clary snaps. Oh. So this is what it is about. Being a corporal, Clary will now bring in more pay than me. She’s the one with a family. She’s the one who needs that extra. I don’t say any of that.
What I tell her: “No. But you’re the one who hobbled Leske. I was just there to become a pincushion.”
“You figured it out,” she retorted. “Some sarden assignment. You weren’t even supposed to find him! The Watch Commander told me you turned down the promotion. Told them to give it to me.”
I realise my eyes are slipping shut. It isn’t a pretence. The healing has tired me. I crack them open a little. “You know me,” I say casually. “I hate paperwork. You’d just be doing it for me anyway.”
I hear something about a great lummox and a hill barbarian. It doesn’t matter. I’m drifting off to sleep. And I know that when I wake up, Corporal Goodwin will be there.
