Title: Lucky Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 260 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 2/B Summary: Clary feels lucky. Undeservedly so. Set in the Lies universe.
-
Goddess, I’ve been lucky. Very lucky.
I remember waiting to die. That was the last time I was a loose Dog. After that, it was all uphill. Working. Keeping my promise to the Goddess. It’s fair strange how working’s a habit on its own. Once you’ve settled in to it, doing proper Dog work isn’t that hard after all.
I shouldn’t have lived. The Rats didn’t think I would. I didn’t think I would. But I sarden did.
And then they gave me Mattes.
I don’t deserve him. Ishram told me what he did, Dogging me all those weeks. Thinking the worse of me. Thinking I was crooked. And when I told him to get the rest of the Guard, he did it. Because it was me who was asking him. I didn’t have to produce orders.
And then it was Mattes who figured out who the Rat was. He took off at a run, got Nyler to take word to the nearest kennels, and then came back. Took the knife that was meant for me, right in the stomach.
Lucky. Too lucky. I sit by the healer’s bed, and I daren’t crush his hand. Daren’t say a word. My throat threatens to choke up on me anyway.
Don’t you dare die, you great lummox. If you do, I’ll go all the way to the Black God’s realms and drag you back and kill you again myself. One fierce Dog, all on my own.
His lips curve in a faint smile.
I am lucky. Very lucky.
We don’t need words.
