Summary: Mattes fears the worst. Clary is missing. Set in the Lies universe.

It is Clary’s knife.
I turn it over in my hands, disquieted. The number, stamped into the hilt, is the serial number registered to Clary. I remember the day she got it from the armoury. I was with her.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions. There was Elior. Now, Liam Nond is dead. This won’t be as easy as Elior’s. Liam’s area is Unicorn District, why is he here? Noble bastard blood is red, but still noble. Caking the knife and my hands. There’s going to be a gods-awful ruckus about this.
The dead don’t speak.
I want to close my eyes. Instead, my Dog training takes over. Tells me what I can guess from Liam’s body. Tells me what I can’t guess.
And in the end, it all adds to one thing: suspicion. I need to find Clary.
I don’t know where she’s gone. And that might be the most frightening part of this all: I cannot trust my partner. My partner might have killed a fellow Dog.
It doesn’t matter. I stand up anyway. I don’t know how long I’ve been crouching over the body. I can’t find my partner? I will hunt her down. I am a Dog, and it’s Dog-work. That, I can do.
