This is what really happened.

I’ve realised who it is. Leske, Mithros curse that slimy, double-crossing, crooked Dog. The pieces slip together, into place. Like they were always supposed to. It’s Leske who knifed the Commander of Unicorn District, Leske who’s slipping Rogue knives into Dog backs.

Poison into Ishram’s drink.

My heart almost stops. Leske. I’ve left Clary with him. Clary. Gods, Clary, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.

I’m running, long legs eating up the distance before I can begin to tell Nyler what is wrong. Heart pounding in realisation of my error. The stupidest thing I could have done. Too trusting. Too ready to doubt the person I shouldn’t have doubted.

I’m there in time. I see the knife.

I step between Clary and Leske.

I don’t think. I don’t hesitate. It seems the natural place to be.

I hear her yell as the knife goes in. I grip Leske’s muscled forearm to stop him from twisting it or yanking out half my guts while he does it. Smile. He’s up against Clary-and-Mattes, and we’re two angry Dogs on the hunt.

He doesn’t stand a chance.
