Summary: Mattes just isn't used to the cold, but his partner can help with that.
Cold winter nights were the worst. It never got cold in the hills. Not really cold at least, not bite-to-the-bone-don’t-go-outside cold. But, as he found, a partner was the best way to ward off the chill. Out on watch, he could make it an excuse to walk closer to her, or to spend a little longer at dinner warming his hands and bothering her to eat right.
She, in turn, would reason that neither of them would be able to do the job if they ended up with frost bite. It was only logical, therefore, to keep each other warm for the next shift, too.
