I could have told him then. Pox rot it, I’m sick of this suspicion. Sick of lying to Mattes, and sick of the way he moves between hurt and betrayed anger. I want to stop thinking about what Mattes would do in my place. I want to stop thinking about how Dogs need to be able to trust their partners.
I think about what will happen after the crooked, lying, filthy, scummer-sucking Rat is found. I think about us.
I don’t know things can still be the same. You need to trust your partner with your life. Can he do that, after I can stop telling all the lies?
I pause. There is a small fountain here. Out of the corner of my eyes, I see the figures illuminated in blue-green light. Figures of water and air, but mostly water. My hand slips to my purse. Grandda’s taught me well enough. If I drop a coin here, no one will listen to us. They’ll make sure of it. I could tell Mattes. Tell him the truth, without any more lies to keep us turning on each other.
I could end this whole sarden mess here.
Mattes doesn’t stop. Finally, he realises I’m not walking with him. Turns around, brows drawn together in a frown. “Clary!” he calls out.
In the end, I follow him. In the end, I don’t tell him.
