And no matter what the ending is
The story of my life
Is the book of love
Thayet’s been fussing around the sickroom: sweeping, building up the fire, bringing me things to drink. Just as if she had to do it herself; as if there weren’t servants and healers right outside the door, where she banished them as soon as she arrived.
“Will you stop it, already? You’re-” Talking makes me cough, and I can’t continue.
She’s with me in a second, water glass in one hand and handkerchief in the other.
When I have my breath back, I start again. “You’re making me nervous. Just sit, all right?”
“Horselords, Buri,” she argues, but she does sit. “You took a spear to the chest — and what were you even doing on the battlefield? You’re supposed to be retired.”
“It barely punctured my armor.” It would hurt too much to shrug, so I settle for glaring instead. “And I’m not letting Raoul out there without me.” Then, suddenly terrified, I demand, “Where is he?”
She brushes a hand across my forehead. “Sleeping. We’re-” She hesitates. “We’re trading off.”
Horselords, it hurts to laugh. “That’s fair,” I croak, meeting her eyes and letting all my feelings show.
Her worried expression slowly registers surprise. “You still love me?” Her voice is barely a whisper.
“Of course.”
Her smile is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. “You’ll get through this,” she says, shakily. “I am not going to let you die.”
