Title: Not Welcome Here Rating: PG Wordcount: 142 Pairing: Team Girl Power (Buri/Thayet) Round: 1/B Summary: A fortuneteller's words come into focus. (Italicized text is quoted from the song "Book of Love" by Dar Williams and excluded from word count.)
Then an unfeeling oracle Will say you did come near But you are not welcome here
Eventually everyone’s married who’s going to be, busy having babies and running their fiefs, and the social burden lessens for a while.
We have fun together, Onua and I. Thayet, too, when she has time; and a fellow called Sarge, and some of the other Riders. Work slides into play slides into evenings spent in easy conversation about both. It’s just Onua and I that slide into bed, speaking in two languages and not caring who knows.
“Why don’t you ever stay?” I ask, as she’s putting her clothes back on, late one night.
She gives me a sad smile and pats my cheek. “I’m not her, Buri.”
A fortuneteller once spoke to me of loss and loneliness and the impossibility of moving on before it’s time. As Onua lets herself out, I finally understand.

I was not expecting that
Buri/Onua, yes, but not THAT element, which now feels absolutely true for them. Also, great song tie in. It's making me want to find my Dar Williams stuff again.
