Title: If I Play a Part Rating: PG Wordcount: 232 Pairing: Team Girl Power (Buri/Thayet) Round: 1/B Summary: The latest in a series of awkward conversations. (Italicized text is quoted from the song "Book of Love" by Dar Williams and excluded from word count.)
If I play a part Can I be redeemed?
We’ve had plenty of awkward conversations over the years, and no shortage since we arrived in Corus. At one point I actually yelled at Thayet, “Just tell me, do you want me to play chaperone or not?” because she wouldn’t give me a straight answer.
But this — this is a new level of disconcerting.
“The Duchess of Naxen informs me I need ladies in waiting,” she says, gray eyes level. “And it would be the best way to keep you close without occasioning comments from the nobility.”
“No, but I’d get comments aplenty from the other ladies-in-waiting.” I can feel the scowl on my face.
“I thought of that,” she says patiently. “I spoke to Mistress Cooper. You know she taught Alanna to dress and comport herself like a lady?”
I answer with a snort. “That worked out well.”
Her voice is sad when she answers, cutting right to the heart of the matter. “I know this isn’t what you wanted. But this country needs a queen. And you can see how much more good I’ll be able to do.”
We’ve talked about this before. I just nod, not looking at her now. I don’t want to be the one holding her back.
“At least try it, Buri?” She grips my shoulders, leaning her forehead against mine. “Please?”
“Fine,” I snap. “I’ll try it.”

oh, god, Thayet, you know not what you do!
This is brilliant, and a little bit heartbreaking. And shows so much of the mad things people try and do for another.
Also -- win. No, but I’d get comments aplenty from the other ladies-in-waiting.”
