“You and Thayet,” Raoul muses, stretched out in bed with his hands behind his head. “I think I suspected, once upon a time, but I can’t say I ever really thought it to be true. Did anyone else-?”
“Jon knew,” Buri says quietly, pulling the sheet up to her waist.
“Ouch.”
She sighs a yes. “He was able to come to terms, more or less, he just never expected- well you know, you didn’t either.”
“Why did you end it?” Raoul is watching her intently. “You two have been together almost your entire life.”
“We kept casting each other away, starting from when we arrived here. That’s probably the root of it. And the Riders helped us stay close, but Thayet’s turned over command fully now, and I just couldn’t keep up the charade. She always needed to be first for me, but I wasn’t first for her, and it just kept spiraling downwards.”
“I’m sorry,” Raoul touches her hand. “And so you fell into bed with me?” It’s a teasing comment, not a rebuke at all and she’s pleased to see his eyes are twinkling.
“It was a lucky fall,” Buri answers. “You made me lose my breath.”
From the look on his face she suspects he’s about to say something sweet, but then there’s yelling outside, a man’s harsh voice, and Raoul sits bolt upright, cursing under his breath. “Kel,” he gasps, and Buri leans for her dagger.
