Title: Close to What You Dreamed Rating: PG Wordcount: 141 Pairing: Team Girl Power (Buri/Thayet) Round: 1/B Summary: Buri watches Thayet and tries to get used to Tortall. (Italicized text is quoted from the song "Book of Love" by Dar Williams and excluded from word count.)
Tell me what you see Is it close to what you dreamed
The throne room positively glitters, light from innumerable candles reflecting off mirrored wall panels and the precious adornments of the assembled crowd. It’s so different from home — different from my people’s mountain villages, of course, but different even from the Warlord’s court, too. I don’t belong here.
When I see Thayet — still Thayet jian Wilima, but not for much longer — enter the room, I know she does.
Her white and pink gown can only be described as confectionary; her ornaments are jewels the same shade of fathoms-deep blue as the young king’s tunic. At home they were just sapphires, by no means the most memorable of her jewels. Here they are Conte blue.
She’s practical, Thayet, but she had dreams once. Impossible dreams, she said.
It Tortall, at least some of them can come true.

♥ I love the notion of plain old sapphires suddenly become more meaningful. This is very poetic.
