Summary: Buri talks to Thayet before she marries Raoul

Thayet’s eyes are damp. “I can’t believe you’re getting married.”
“In a fort,” Buri points out, eyes dancing. “I can hardly believe it myself.”
“It’s fitting, I suppose...” the queen grins. “I’m so happy for you.”
Buri takes her hand. “You don’t need to pretend, Thayet.”
“I am happy,” Thayet insists. “I know that if I had listened to you all those years ago you would have listened to me now, but that time is past, and I will be happy even if I have to force myself.”
“Thank you,” Buri says quietly. “That- means more than I can say.”
“Raoul loves and admires you,” Thayet’s eyes have a strange light in them, and Buri cannot tell for the life of her what it is supposed to mean. “That will be good for you. It will all be fine.”
“It will be,” Buri says, face dreamy, and the resolve in her voice is nothing like Thayet’s was two decades ago. There is no hint that she is convincing herself.
Thayet touches her arm. “Buri-”
“I loved you,” Buri says firmly, and Thayet has to accept that as enough.
