Title: Never Leave
Rating: G
Word Count: 430 words
Pairing: Team Girl Power
Round/Fight: 1/B
Summary: Thayet comforts Buri.
Buri bolted upright; the blanket falling away from her body, gasping, her black eyes searched the darkness.
Shuddering, bringing her knees to her chest, she felt sobs billowing in her throat. Tears rolled over her golden-brown cheeks, her mouth trembled.
Taking in shaky breaths, she stared at the glimmering remains of the fire. The smell of smoke soothed her pounding heart.
She, deafly, heard the whisper of blankets moving. She heard Thayet’s sleep-slack voice murmur, “Buri?”
She jumped slightly when a bare arm slide over her shoulders; she felt a hand pat her knee comfortingly.
“Another nightmare?”
The voice was warm and soft, a breath of caring tenderness. It was nothing like the coarse and violent yells that plagued her in her sleep.
Buri made herself nod, the action bring strands of her hair to fall around her face.
Thayet’s arms coiled around her, bringing her into an embrace. Her lips on Buri’s hair, Thayet whispered, “It’s alright, Buri.”
Buri shivered, flashes of the dream coming to her eyes. She sobbed, “Their gone...”
Thayet closed her eyes; Buri’s mutter bringing tears to her eyes, “I know, I'm sorry.”
“They’re not co-coming back.”
Thayet tightened her hold of the girl, “They’re in a better place.”
Buri clamped her eyes shut, “They never said goodbye...”
Thayet could not answer; her throat was blocked with her own held back wails of grief.
Buri sniffled, the images of her mother and brother ghosting across her eyes.
“It’s alright. They’re still with you.” Thayet’s voice is a whisper, barely heard. She kissed Buri’s cheek, her thumb whipping away the tears staining her cheeks.
Placing a pale hand over Buri’s heart, she murmured, “They’ll always be with you. No matter what. Hold onto them, and they’ll always be there.”
The princess pulled her bedroll beside Buri’s; she slipped under the cover, her hands over Buri’s.
Buri sniffled, burying her head deeper into her pillow. Gripping Thayet’s hand tightly, she clenched her eyes tight, trying to blink away the tears that were threatening to spill.
The cold air nipped at her face, crystallising her tears. Shivering, she tucked herself into her bedroll.
“Hold onto them, and they’ll never leave you,” Thayet’s words brought a veil of comfort to the girl, a shield of strength, a will to move on.
Letting a shattering sigh leave her chapped lips, Buri prayed for her lost mother and brother.
She gripped their memory tightly, using them as her guardian angel.
As she lost herself to the realm of sleep, Buri squeezed Thayet’s hand and whispered, “Kalasin will never leave you, either.”
