Title: Tell Rating: G Word count: 163 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 4/A Summary: Mattes almost works up the courage to tell Clary something. Set in the DeadAlive universe, where Mattes and Clary are FBI agents. Based on a Brandon Sanderson quote.
-
It is quiet here, in the waiting room. I am keeping my vigil in my own way, waiting for the doctors to tell me if Clary is going to live or die.
It is late here, and I’m thinking about my grandfather, back on the reservation. I’m thinking about his wise dark eyes, and the wrinkles clustered around them. I’m thinking about his hands, veined with age, but startlingly strong and dexterous.
I’m listening to him. You must find the most important words a man can say, he’s saying. He’s told me that the night before I left, but I’m remembering, and he’s telling me that again.
For some reason, now, the words make me think of Clary, and three words I’ll never get to tell her, if the doctors give me bad news. I’m praying – to who, I don’t know – that Clary will live. And if she does, I’ll tell her. Three little words.
The most important words a man can say.

Ooh, Mattes is Native American? That's awesome! I like that he's remembering his grandfather's advice.
