Title: Fire Rating: G Word count: 230 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 4/A Summary: Mattes meets a former lover. Clary is unimpressed. Set in the DeadAlive universe, where Mattes and Clary are FBI agents. Based on a quote from the X-Files.

There. I’ve said it.
I hate that woman. I hate the way she just waltzes into our office, dumps a case on Mattes’ desk, and the wary way Mattes regards her – but jumps on what she gives him, anyway. I’ve noticed the appraising way she looks at me, the way she puts her arm on Mattes as if he’s hers.
I hate the way Mattes lets her do it, and doesn’t shake her off.
“It’s taken me ten years to forget about that woman, and then she shows up in my life with a case like that,” he says. If I’ve ever known Mattes, then it’s dislike – strong dislike – that I’m reading in him, now.
I’m not entirely convinced. I keep thinking about the way he stands, the way he allows her to touch him, and I keep feeling the same old anger.
I quash it ruthlessly because we have work to do. “So she shows up knowing the power she has over you and she makes you walk through fire, is that it?”
My control isn’t as good as I think it is. I’m as angry as I sound.
Mattes’ hand comes to rest awkwardly on my elbow, steadying me. Or restraining me. I don’t know which. “’Lena is fire,” he says, so seriously and so unhappily that I want to believe him.
I don’t know if I can.

Ooh, I love Clary's jealousy, and that she can't quite contain it!
