I wasn’t sure what to think when I was told an AD himself had assigned Clary as my partner. It wasn’t as if I have a reputation for being a difficult person to get along with. I’m easy; I work with just about any partner. So I figured that meant the opposite: that there was something special about Agent Clary Goodwin, or she was just that difficult to get along with.
There was a bit of a reputation there, and one or two notes about a disciplinary hearing, but if an AD had his eyes on her, I figured it meant she wasn’t that bad.
Well, at least she could shoot. Training course statistics were one thing. Being in a live fire situation was another.
“Thanks for saving my life.”
I revised my judgement of Clary Goodwin. Clearly, no matter how irritable or sarcastic she got, she was capable of giving due credit where it was owed.
“Oh, I was just trying to avoid the paperwork,” I said casually. She stared at me, arms folded across her chest in disbelief. “Senior Special Agent Matthias Tunstall, remember?” I say cheerfully. Too cheerfully. “There’s a reason I’m not in charge of anything bigger than a teaspoon.”
She muttered something under her breath which included ‘unbelievable,’ and turned and stalked out of the office.
I watched her retreating back, and decided there and then that it was a good start, and that I liked Clary Goodwin.
