Title: Basilisk 3 Rating: PG Word count: 195 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 4/A Summary: Part of the Open Ends series. Set before Basilisk. Mattes and Clary stumble upon something that looks like a basilisk did the killing. -
“Basilisk,” Mattes mutters, tugging at the woman’s hand. There is a fierce sadness in his eyes, one that fades away and is replaced by intent focus. We need to get everything we can figure out from the corpse, before the Dogs on duty take her away.
I snort quietly. “That’s just a story,” I remind him. Any gixie could tell you as much; children’s stories about unicorns and winged horses and griffins and basilisks. “And don’t basilisks turn people to stone?”
He motions; I try my own luck at prying whatever it is out of the unlucky mot’s hand. I fail, but I frown. Corpses grow cold and stiff, but it was too soon for that. Far too soon. I give up and decide there’s no way to get whatever it is that she’s holding out of her hand. Sometimes, being a Dog is about knowing when to Dog, and when to give up because you can’t win.
Mattes raises an eyebrow. I know what he’s thinking. “Just a story?” he wants to know. “Maybe the old stories meant like stone.”
I close the poor mot’s open and staring eyes. I don’t argue with Mattes.
