Title: Funeral Rating: G Word count: 153 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 4/A Summary: Clary attends Mattes’ funeral. Modern AU, where Clary and Mattes are both in the FBI. Inspired by X-Files and Kelly Family…and a hefty dose of Kipler. WARNING: Character death.

I am not alone at Mattes’ funeral, though I may as well be. Beka shows up, and I’m almost afraid to ask her if she’s…heard anything. Or seen anything.
Mattes didn’t have any family. He’d left them all behind, he said. Everyone who’s shown up are all colleagues, all friends. Acquaintances. Among them, I am alone. My claim to a bit of Mattes is undisputed. I’ve worked with him for almost fourteen years, and we’ve saved each other’s life countless times along the way.
Such a neat thing, a coffin. All wood, sharp panels, and angled sides, meant to insulate us from the dead. I watch as they lower it into the cold earth, and I am almost thankful there is no water nearby, no pond, no spring.
I force myself to keep watching, to make no sound. To show nothing of my distress or my sorrow.
And then I am truly alone.
