Title: The Good in Goodbye
Rating: PG
Word Count: 315 words
Pairing: Kel/Maura
Round/Fight: 1/C
Summary: Kel hates the thought of leaving Dunlath, but there is always the chance to return. For Nicki, in the hope that this was something worth looking forward to!
"I have to leave soon," Kel whispered.
She knew Maura, folded inside Kel's arms, wasn't really sleeping, and was proved right when her brown eyes snapped open.
"You can't stay another day?" Maura murmured thickly, rolling over to press her face into the pillow.
"Not even another hour," Kel answered, brushing Maura's hair behind one of her ears, so she couldn't claim she hadn't heard. "You know I shouldn't have stayed the night."
Maura turned onto her side so she could shoot Kel a wicked grin. "It looked like rain."
That had been the excuse for Kel staying, at any rate, and once Kel had heard it, she hadn't put up much of an argument, even though all the curtains had been closed to mask the cloudless sky.
"If I don't leave now, I never will," Kel said reluctantly, leaning over to press a kiss to Maura's cheek.
Maura's hands wound around Kel's arms, holding her in place - although, as the stronger of the two, Kel could easily have slipped free had she wanted. "That is not an inducement for me to let you go."
"You would be tired of me if I stayed all the time," Kel said teasingly, though it was something she had wondered previously.
"I would not," Maura answered, her eyes more serious than Kel had ever seen them. "I would keep you here forever if I thought I could, or if I thought you'd be happy. But you will never be happy, my lady knight, unless I let you roam."
There was a lump in Kel's throat that she couldn't quite force words past, because there were things like duty and honour that she prized above her own well-being. Maura seemed to understand, for she pulled Kel in for a long, sweet kiss. "Go, then, if you must. You know where I am when you are able to return."
