Title: Mothers Rating: G Word Count: 224 Pairing: Maura/Kel Fight: 1C Summary: Maura reassures Kel about her new role. (Part of the Dickens Arc - Kel/Wyldon)
“Thank you for coming,” Kel said warmly, pressing her hand into the smaller woman’s. “I know Wyldon considers you among his favorite people; our wedding wouldn’t be the same without all of our loved ones.”
Maura beamed up at her, brown eyes filled with amusement. “I hope that we can get to know each other better, Kel, now that Alistair and I are in Corus. We’ll be here for the rest of the year.” She rested her free hand on her abdomen, which was swollen to the point it was impossible to hide that she was expecting a child. “I wanted her to be born in Dunlath, but my mother-in-law isn’t able to travel. There are times when having a mother nearby is important.”
Kel could not help but glance at her husband, who stood near two of his own daughters. Margarry was heavy with child, due within the next month. And she was without a mother or a mother-in-law.
Maura’s eyes had followed hers, and she squeezed Kel’s hand. “She has you now.”
“I’m not a typical step-mother,” Kel murmured. “I know less about birthing than Owen does.”
“That’s what midwives are for,” Maura pointed out. “A mother – or step-mother – is there to offer love and support, and I doubt you’re incapable of that, if everything I’ve heard from Wyldon is true.”

I adore this piece - it fits so neatly into the arc, and I like the glimpse of Maura and Alistair's relationship, and the fact that they're happy together.

Fascinating take on this! I love the way Maura offers the reassurance Kel needs.

Thank you both!! Rosie, I'm glad you can tolerate this, as the wrong A-name is being proffered.
