Title: Pillow Talk Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 255 words Pairing: Kel/Maura Round/Fight: 1/C Summary: Kel's timing is a little off. For Lisa.
"You must be the only knight in the country who requests border patrol."
Kel laughed. "My lord Wyldon and a few select others ask to go if they think it necessary, but, yes, I believe I am a rarity. Although most knights don't have the incentives I do."
"And people aren't suspicious?" Maura enquired, tracing a line down Kel's bare arm.
"I suspect people have given up trying to find reasons for what I do." Kel shifted so she was better covered by the sheet - it felt important for this conversation. "Would you mind if they were?"
Maura shrugged at her, apparently not feeling the same compulsion to cover herself. "Only if it made people cease trading with Dunlath. I hardly care what people say about me. For one thing, I'm too far away to hear it."
"It might stop you marrying well."
"So what if it does? Perhaps I won't marry at all. Douglass never did."
"Douglass didn't have a fief to think of."
Maura sat up in bed, looking impatient. "If you are trying to tell me I don't take care of my fief, come out and say it. Otherwise, let me worry about the line of succession. I assure you, I haven't neglected to think about it."
Kel held her hands up in defeat. "I won't ask again."
The annoyance melted off Maura's face, and she leaned forward to cup Kel's chin with her hand. "Good," she said softly. "Because I can think of things I'd far rather do right now."

I love this, and I don't even know how to explain the reasons why. I like how different Kel and Maura are from each other. And everything else, too.

I love how Maura isn't afraid to snap at Kel - "If you are trying to tell me I don't take care of my fief, come out and say it" - and Kel's typical, laid-back demeanor - 'Kel held her hands up in defeat. "I won't ask again."' Lovely!

I love both the affection between them -- and that it doesn't stop Maura from basically telling Kel to mind her own business. So cute!

Thank you, everybody - this was really one of my favourite pieces when I first started exploring the pairing.
(special thanks to Jess for taking the time to QC everything!!)

"You must be the only knight in the country who requests border patrol."
And this was the line that spawned a thousand scenarios. Love it
