Title: Somewhere To Begin
Rating: G
Word Count: 398
Pairing: Kel/Maura – Team Protector
Round/Fight: 1C
Summary: Kel makes a decision. #2 of the Heartstrings series by Katty and I.
Kel tapped her fingers on the edge of the desk, feeling restless. The letter from Maura, tucked away safely in the pocket of her breeches, was a heavy weight on her heart. She had never planned on returning to Dunlath—not after the way things had ended between them—but the fact that she was even considering it scared her.
“Was Lerant well, the last time you saw him?” asked Raoul, not looking up from his paperwork. His dark, curled hair showed shining threads of grey; the laugh lines around his eyes were deeper, well-worn from worry. Kel was secretly glad that he would not be retiring for many years yet; though the men of the Own were a lively bunch, she didn’t envy him the workload that came with being commander.
“He was well,” answered Kel. She returned her hands to her lap. Stone. “I know he misses the Own, but it seemed like his duties in Dunlath kept him satisfied. He and Maura understand each other.”
“Good,” said Raoul, with a smile. “And his leg?”
“He seemed to be managing,” she said. Lerant’s leg injury had been the reason why he had been forced to leave the Own; it had been an unlucky sword thrust, piercing through the hard muscle of his thigh. The healer had arrived too late and the muscle had refused to knit properly. Imagining it made Kel wince; she could almost feel the painful slide of steel through flesh. Even more painful was the knowledge that if Lerant had never been injured, he would never have met Maura. “It was obvious that he was uncomfortable,” she added, “but he never complained once, while I was there.”
Raoul smiled at that. The two of them fell into silence, and Kel let her thoughts return to Maura.
It had been agonising, ignoring all of the letters that Maura kept writing her. Kel couldn’t trust herself, or what she might say. Some of the letters she had left unopened, though it was impossible to even think of throwing them away.
And as much as it would hurt her to see Maura again, to be confronted with Lerant’s child growing insider her, Kel realised how much worse it would be if she never saw her again. Despite the muddle of feelings she kept trying to push away, it was that simple.
She was going to Dunlath.
