Title: Convenience Rating: PG Word Count: 208 words Pairing: Kel/Maura Round/Fight: 1/C Summary: Kel is not happy with the gossip she hears. For Lisa.
"I heard, you know," Kel told Dom, stopping him in his tracks as he left the mess hall. "About your arrangement with Lady Maura."
He shrugged at her, looking wary. "What of it?"
"I don't think it's right."
He folded his arms across his chest, and repeated, "What of it?"
When she failed to respond, he sighed, and steered her to a more private corner. "Maura needs an heir, you know that. We're both going into this marriage with our eyes open. She's not going to ask me to stay at the fief - in fact, I think she's happier the further away I am. So, if I can give her an heir, and she gives me security in my old age, where's the harm?"
Kel rubbed her face, thinking it was her fate to be drawn to people who married for the good of fiefs - even fiefs that weren't their own. "She's my friend," she said slowly. How would she bear seeing them married, seeing Maura's face flushed with happiness when Dom was near, or washed with sadness when he wasn't? Would her expressions mirror Kel's own?
"Then we will still be close," Dom said affectionately, giving Kel's arm a squeeze, and entirely missing the point.

Aw, poor Kel. I love this one because you play around with the readers' heads a bit.

This is a fantastic line. I really like the tone of this, and the ideas behind it.

Thank you! Couldn't resist the Cleon parallels.
