Title: Honest Conversations
Rating: G
Word Count: 275 words
Pairing: Kel/Maura
Round/Fight: 1/C
Summary: Maura and Douglass have an honest conversation. #5 of the Heartstrings series by Wordy and I
Douglass found Maura in the library, curled up on a lounge reading a book. He entered the room quietly, careful not to disturb her. He picked up his own book, and settled in a chair across from her. He’d lost count of how many evenings they spent like this over the years; silently enjoying each others company while lost in a good book. He waited, knowing she would speak when she was ready.
After an hour, Maura finally broke the silence. “Lady Knight Keladry will coming for Midwinter,” she says, without taking her eyes off the page before her. “She will be at Dunlath within the week.”
This came as no surprise to Douglass. “Yes, I heard from Nurse a few hours ago.” He closed his book gently, placing it on his lap. “I would have thought you would tell me yourself, though. Especially after… Keladry’s last visit.”
Maura’s cheeks coloured slightly. “I knew you would not approve,” she replied. “I did not want you to talk me out of it.” She still did not look up, but Douglass could see that her eyes had stopped moving.
Douglass snorted. “Maura, my dear, I do not think Lord Theodore himself would be able to talk you out of something you set your mind so determinedly to.”
Maura rolled her eyes. “Douglass, Lord Theodore cannot talk.” She finally looked up. “And you know you could, if you tried. Just… let me be young and foolish for once.” She gave him a tightlipped smile.
Douglass looked sad. “If only I could, darling.” He stood, moving to sit on the chair next to her. “I worry about you, that is all. Regardless of what type of knight Keladry is to the realm, things went badly between you. Bringing her here, after the history between you, and in your condition…” he trailed off, choosing his next words carefully. “I cannot help but ask you to reconsider. For your own sake.”
Maura frowned. “It is too late Douglass, she has already made arrangements to come. Lerant would ask questions if I were to rescind the invitation.” Her brown eyes looked down at her belly. Quietly she added, “Besides, I miss her.”
Douglass sighed. “Well that’s that, isn’t it?” He cracked a smile. “I suppose I had better ask Lord Theodore to behave then, though I cannot guarantee anything of course. Your know he has a mind of his own.”
