Title: An Unexpected Reply Rating: G Word Count: 242 words Pairing: Kel/Maura Round/Fight: 1/C Summary: Maura receives an unexpected reply. #3 of the Heartstrings series by Wordy and I
Maura held the letter in hands that trembled. She read it again slowly, making sure she had understood correctly, and then looked up. Lerant watched her expectantly.
“She said she is coming,” Maura started, hesitantly. “Lord Raoul has granted her time off over Midwinter. The weather mages say it will be a bitter winter and he believes there will not be much raiding - she asks if she can impose on us for a few weeks.”
Lerant smiled, and Maura could tell he was pleased with himself for suggesting the visit in the first place. To be perfectly honest, she had only agreed to invite Kel to Dunlath for Midwinter to stop him asking questions about their falling out. It would have suited her to have a quiet holiday, free from the awkward feelings Kel stirred within her.
“She would appreciate the break, I’m sure,” Lerant ventured. “Life on the forts, during winter, is brutal…” he trailed off, absently touching his damaged thigh.
Maura rose slowly from her chair, not quite used to the awkwardness of her expanding belly. Lerant stood, reaching to help his wife. “I will send a mage-message then,” Maura decided, straightening up with Lerant’s help. “It would be poor form to deny an active knight her rest, after all, particularly one who works so hard.” She tried to keep the bitterness from her voice.
“Perhaps she will be here for the birth,” Lerant remarked. “Wouldn’t that be something?”
Maura’s hands clenched. “It would, indeed.”

Oof, Lerant - putting his foot in his mouth unintentionally. Excellent!
