Title: Letters Forgotten
Rating: G
Word Count: 346 words
Pairing: Kel/Maura
Round/Fight: 1/C
Summary: Maura looks for letters she had hoped to forget. #7 of the Heartstrings series by Wordy and I
Maura’s new office was smaller, and had less of a view. She did not begrudge her unborn child her old office – well, not really – as she knew it was the best room in the castle. It had been her bedroom to begin with, and had she not married Lerant, she would probably still be sleeping there. She refused to have the baby sleep in one of Yolane’s old rooms, though, and realized that relinquishing her childhood room was the only real option.
Carefully stepping around several trunks, Maura shivered. The room still gave her the creeps, despite several coats of paint, new furniture and a somewhat dubious ritual cleansing by Lord Theodore. She reached out with her Gift, lighting a few candles so she could see better.
She scanned the boxes and trunks, searching for the one that held her letters. It was in the corner, by her desk. Maura pulled her chair to face the trunk, and sat. Reaching over, she pressed her fingers to the lock, feeling her magic flow into the brass and undo the clasp.
The trunk sprang open, and Maura pushed back the lid. Piles of letters sat before her, grouped in ribbon. Her fingers, swollen from pregnancy, ached as she pushed through the piles, looking for the bundle tied with the distinctive grey and cream ribbon. Locating them, she lifted them out gently. Fingering the ribbon, she remembered how expensive it had been and she that she had bought it anyway, because it featured the Mindelan colours. She had bought several yards of it too, expecting her correspondence from Kel to go on considerably longer than it had.
The top letter, the most recent one from Kel, was more than a year old. She had received it not long after Kel had departed Dunlath for the last time – after the wedding.
With a heavy heart she pulled it from the bundle, prised it open, and began to read - despite knowing it held nothing but heartbreak.
Dear Maura,
It pains me to write this letter, but I must be blunt…
