Title: Appreciation
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 189
Pairing: Clary/Mattes
Round/Fight: 4/A
Summary: AU: Clary’s rogue years; arguing with Tom brings out a rebellious streak and she runs off to Port Caynn to get away from it all. Mattes follows, to stand between her and the darkness. Is there any way to recover from this?
That girl was fine but she didn’t appreciate him. (lyrics from Dance Floor Anthem—I Don’t Want To Be In Love By Good Charlotte.) Rated for alcohol; underage drinking/excessive drinking not condoned by author.
In Corus, Mattes and Clary had trawled through the underworld together, prowling the streets where black market deals were made and where ne’er-do-wells watched with glittering eyes from the shadows.
In Corus, Mattes had Clary at his back, and trusted her solid presence there with little more than a passing thought.
In Port Caynn, that presence was sorely missed, and Mattes realized he took nothing for granted anymore. He passed by dark alleys and shadowy corners, but didn’t look too closely. There’s someone else responsible for these wretches, he convinced himself.
In Port Caynn, Mattes had no one at his back, and was responsible for no one but himself, but even in Port Caynn he trawled through the dregs of society to find Clary and drag her out of whatever taverne had plied her with too much ale that night.
He wasn’t sure if it was drunk Clary who made promises, and forgot them when she was sober, or if his partner was sober when she talked and the drink made her forget, but Mattes was determined to keep on searching for her until he figured it all out.
