Title: Going Out
Rating: PG
Word count: 197
Pairing: Clary/Mattes
Round/Fight: 4/A
Summary: AU: Clary’s rogue years; arguing with Tom brings out a rebellios streak and she runs off to Port Caynn to get away from it all. Mattes follows, to stand between her and the darkness. Is there any way to recover from this?
She’s going out to forget they were together, all that time he was taking her for granted. (lyrics from Dance Floor Anthem—I Don’t Want To Be In Love By Good Charlotte.)
It’s been a week since Mattes started noticing something different about his partner, and looking at her right now, the word he thinks of is ‘brittle’.
Clary looks brittle, like a reed about to snap if the wind picks up just a hair.
Though they have nothing on some of the longer-standing Dog partners currently stationed in the Jane Street Kennel, Mattes has been Clary Goodwin’s partner longer than anyone else, and he knows she doesn’t let just anyone in.
It’s doubtful that anyone else notices that the blade of Clary’s tongue is just a little sharper, a little looser now that before.
It isn’t a good change, he doesn’t think, not when its reaction, pure and simple.
Proactive is what being a Dog is all about. Reaction will get you killed.
He almost sighs with relief when he and Clary make it back from Evening Watch, and Tom is there to meet them, to talk to Clary, but as he leaves the two of them, Mattes notices her face, hears Tom’s tone of voice low and unsteady between them, and realizes that this might be more serious than he thinks when Clary doesn’t leave with Tom.
