Title: Looking Out Rating: G Wordcount: 208 Pairing: Team Protector (Kel/Maura) Round: 1/C Summary: Kel and Maura say goodbye.
It was dawn, on the last day of Kel’s leave. She and her men were assembled in Dunlath’s courtyard, making a final check of their mounts and provisions, when Lady Maura emerged from her castle.
She had spoken to the men at dinner the night before — a pretty speech full of patriotism and encouragement, even if it was something she had memorized by now. Later, she and Kel had said a private goodbye.
But now, she sought Kel out once more. They stood face to face for a moment, not touching, and then Maura spoke. “Stay safe up there, Lady Knight,” she said softly. “And don’t work too hard.”
“Maura. I’m the commander of the entire fort.”
“Yes — all the more reason for you to rest once in a while. You’re no good to yourself or anyone else, if you wear yourself out.”
Kel’s eyes watered — from the glare of the rising sun, surely. “I’m the Protector of the Small,” she said, wiping her eyes. “But you sound almost like you’re protecting me.”
“It’s time somebody did.” She leaned up to kiss Kel’s cheek. “Gods all bless, my friend.”
“Gods all bless,” Kel echoed. “Until we meet again.”
