Title: Blame
Rating: PG
Word count: 316
Pairing: Clary/Mattes
Round/Fight: 4/A
Summary: Mattes and Ahuda discuss Clary and blame. Set in the DeadAlive universe where Clary and Mattes are FBI agents. Based on an X-Files quote.
-
Being interrogated by the whole gauntlet of Section Chiefs always puts someone on edge. I should be calming down, now that I’ve been through the entire inevitable reprimand, except that Clary’s in there now, and they shouldn’t be putting her through the same wringer. This time, it was my fault. I made the wrong call; the bomb went off. Except, I think, that Sobel did nothing, by the time they brought him in.
He said he’d handle the bomb.
He hadn’t.
“Calm down,” Ahuda advises me. She’s waiting outside with me, and far more composed than I can hope to be. It’s not her career on the line. “You don't see what's going on here, do you? There's forty-five million dollars worth of damage to the city of Dallas. Lives have been lost. No suspects have been named. So the story that's being shaped ... is that this could have been prevented.”
“Prevented?” I almost laugh. Sobel wasn’t doing any preventing. He’d just sat there, in the same room with the bomb and done…nothing. “They mean to blame us?”
Her hand shoots out and grabs my shoulder, holding me still. “Agent Tunstall,” she says quietly – and that means she’s talking official Fed business here, instead of as a friend – “You and I both know that if it looks bad, it's bad for the FBI. Blame has to be assigned somewhere.”
“If they want someone to blame, they can blame me. Agent Goodwin doesn’t deserve this.”
Isn’t that what responsibility is about? Clary made the right call. I made the wrong one, but we ended up following my judgement. We ended up making a big mistake.
There’s something frighteningly soft, even compassionate in Kebibi Ahuda’s eyes now, and this time when she speaks, I know she’s not speaking as Assistant Director Ahuda but as Ahuda, friend, “She's in there right now saying the same thing about you.”
