Several arrests and a shower later, and I’m at Mattes’ place. Bulls***, if you ask me. All this talk about the new millenium being the end of the world – there’s nothing to it at all. We’re watching the New Year countdown party on Mattes’ television, and maybe counting down in our heads.
I think about Aaron. Almost definitely crazy, and the world’s probably far safer, now that a man like him is behind bars. I glance at Mattes; maybe he’s a little troubled by the boy we had to put away, but the law is the law, and we do what we have to. Murdering people so they’ll be taken up to heaven on the new millenium’s not just crazy – it’s a dangerous sort of crazy, and one we have to put a stop to.
It’s midnight. The tv shows the crowds in Times Square, NYC, holding hands and singing Auld Lang Syne. It’s the New Year, and we’ve made it. No one died, except for the victims of Aaron’s cult. Maybe it’s a good way to spend the New Year, together, after we’ve done our own bit. I can’t help thinking about Tom; wondering what he’s up to, wondering at where I’ve gone after our divorce.
Mattes leans over, and I can smell the sharp mint on his breath, maybe a hint of apples, right before he kisses me – and right before I lean in and kiss him back. I don’t know when it ended. Mattes…isn’t too bad a kisser. But he’s had plenty of practice.
“The world didn’t end,” he says. He’s smiling.
So am I.
“No, it didn’t.”
“Happy New Year, Clary,” he breathes. He’s close enough that I could kiss him again, if I wanted to. I think a part of me does.
“Happy New Year, Mattes,” I say.
His arm slips around my shoulder, drawing me just slightly closer to him. I don’t resist. After all, we all deserve a break, every now and then. And it’s the new year.
