Dangerous? Check. Risky? Check.
Gershom’s got a big one on his hands this time, and infiltrating Caynn, a homegrown terrorist group, always has its risks. Strangely, this one was a bit of dumb luck. I wouldn’t have been anywhere near infiltration, except that I’d been approached.
I can’t tell Clary anything, of course. Section Chief Acton’s decision, and Ahuda unwillingly backed him up on that one, which must mean that it’s big. Ahuda normally makes the calls, and Acton has the sense not to dispute them.
I can’t tell her where I’m going, that this assignment is high-risk, or that I’m even going anywhere except on a date. Lie to her as if your life depends on it, Agent Tunstall, because we are certain there is a leak, and so your life may very well depend on it.
“Heading out already?” Clary wants to know. I think I catch a trace of…bitterness? Anger? I don’t even know why she’s angry. It’s just another date. That’s what I’ve told her. She doesn’t look at me, and that’s another tell-tale sign. She’s too busy staring at my fish, watching the way the iridescent scales catch the light as they swim about in the tank.
“Yeah,” I say. I’m not lying. I’m just…avoiding the subject.
If this was the last time I could talk to Clary, what would I tell her? What could I tell her?
Smile, and lie to her as if your life depends on it.
I grin, and say, “If you don’t hear from me by midnight…feed my fish.”
She snorts, and swats at me. “Get on with it already, you idiot. She’s not that bad, is she?”
I can’t tell her that what I’ve just said is the closest to the truth that I can get. And it’s the closest to anything meaningful I can ever bring myself to tell her.
Even if my life depends on it.
