Title: Ding an Sich
Rating: PG
Word count: 326
Pairing: Clary/Mattes
Round/Fight: 4/A
Summary: Clary thinks about Mattes and Tom. Set in the DeadAlive universe, where Clary and Mattes are FBI agents. And yes, Tom is Tomlan.
-
Sometimes, I catch glimpses of a humble, earthy spirit in Mattes, the same one I saw in Tom. Tom was an artist, a carpenter intent on shaping wood with little of the advantages some of those hi-tech tools you can get from the hardware store would have given him.
The more I think about it, maybe it was the earth in Tom; he liked working with his hands, and he liked shaping wood with those gentle hands. I’m convinced that to Tom, what mattered was a sort of honesty in how he lived, and his craft was a large part of that.
Mattes is a little like Tom, with the same sense of honesty to him. I know he’s got a Native American heritage, but we don’t talk very much about it, the same way I don’t talk about my marriage to Tom (and our divorce), or what I did before Ahuda pulled me into Violent Crimes.
But that’s where the similarity ends. Tom’s trueness will not let him be anything other than the gentle man that he is. He creates. Sometimes, I think, that part of him can’t stand the darkness in me. I’ve killed before, even found it exciting. I can’t talk to Tom about that. I’m afraid to. Special Agent Clary Goodwin, complete with hard choices, and killing has to vanish when I’m with Tom, and after a while, it wasn’t possible for us to go on.
Mattes is fierce, intense, and protective of those he cares about. We do the same job; he has his own weaknesses, his own moments where he doubts. Where he can’t pull that trigger, but in the end, he does it, the same way I do it. Because we have to. That’s our job. With Mattes, I don’t have to hide. I just have to be.
We’re partners, and a pair of well-matched agents – and sometimes, I wonder what would have happened if I’d met him first.
