Title: Psychic
Rating: PG
Word count: 351
Pairing: Clary/Mattes
Round/Fight: 4/A
Summary: Mattes isn’t sure what to think about psychics. Set in the DeadAlive universe, where Clary and Mattes are FBI agents. Based on an X-Files quote.
-
I am pacing the corridor, furious. Ready to kill. I think about what my grandfather tells me, and for the first time, I think I understand. That once you’ve killed, there’s no going back. The killer instinct, the ability to kill – it’s in a little box inside you. Once you’ve opened it, you can run away from it. Once you’ve woken the bear, it sleeps a little less easily now, and it can stir at the slightes provocation.
A killer. I’m ready to be a killer. That’s how I feel right now. I’m furious at the man who put Clary into the ICU, and I’m equally furious that the Bureau isn’t doing anything. Internal investigations are dragging. They’re taking too long, and I’m convinced that Clary is slipping away. That she’s dying, and none of us can do a thing about it except to wait.
“Mattes?”
I turn and fix the ‘psychic’ witness, the one we’ve been protecting, with my best stare. The one I seldom have to pull out, and that people seldom get to see. She doesn’t falter. Maybe I’m losing my touch, because I’m definitely angry enough.
“I don’t have to be psychic to see that you’re in a very dark place,” she says, quietly, “Much darker than where Agent Goodwin is. Walking willingly into the darkness cannot help her at all. Only the light…”
“Enough,” I snap. I’m disgusted, and I’m not sure if it’s with the New Age juju that she’s spouting, or with myself. Maybe because I’d have bought it if it came from an elder. Maybe. “You’re not saying anything to me with that harmonic convergence crap.”
Now she is angry. Just as angry as I am. “Why don't you just drop your cynicism and your paranoia and your defeat. You know, just because it's positive and good, doesn't mean it's silly or trite.”
“Sometimes, it is,” I snarl and stalk out. I’ve had enough of this. I’m finding Roland. He put Clary into the ICU, he can jolly well answer for it. And one way or another, no one’s going to stop me.
