“There is no police report of this incident, Agent Tunstall, and there is no body. You know that.”
“Since I am unfamiliar with any such incident, ma’am, no, how would I know that?”
Ahuda struck him. Mattes staggered back a step, blinking. His cheek stung where Ahuda had slapped him, and he reflexively raised a hand to touch it.
“Don’t give me that bulls***,” Ahuda snarled, “Is that clear, Agent Tunstall? You aren’t the only one who’s worried about Agent Goodwin’s condition right now. And fixating on Agent Roland and what he might have done to Goodwin isn’t going to help anyone.”
Mattes breathed heavily. There was a sullen and angry fire in his eyes; one Ahuda hadn’t quite seen before, and for a moment, she thought he was going to turn and walk away right there. Just try it, she thought silently, daring him to. You have to do this the right way, Mattes.
Finally, he spoke, darkly, “How's it feel? Constant denial of everything, questions answered with a question.”
“I want to know what happened, damn it. Don’t make me drag you in for an official report, because God help me, Mattes, I will do that if you force me to.”
Another flicker of anger. “Roland happened. He shot Clary. He’s working with Pearl Skinner, isn’t he? Tell me where he is.”
“Mattes – ”
“TELL ME!” he roared suddenly, and Ahuda was taken aback by the vehemence and fury in Mattes’ voice. This was blind, uncaring rage. “Tell me, damn you. I’ll turn in my badge, and my gun – anything you want. Give me his location.”
“And then what?” she countered, forcing herself to sound cool and detached. To give Mattes what he didn’t want, and yet needed most right now. Reason. “He sleeps with the fishes? We’re not the mafia, Agent Tunstall. I know it’s easy to forget, but we work for the Department of Justice.”
“That’s what I want,” Mattes countered, fiercely.
Ahuda shook her head. Sadness and pity competed; the pity won. “Go sit in with her, Mattes,” she said quietly. “Clary needs you there now.”
Without waiting for his response, she left.
