Title: Pawn for a Queen Rating: PG Word Count: 187 Pairing: Kalasin/Wyldon Fight: 1/C Summary: Kalasin traders her pawn for a queen. A series where Wyldon and Kalasin struggle with the idea of duty.
Playing chess with the eldest princess becomes one of Wyldon’s favourite pastimes. She’s sharp, and he admires her in a way that he’s never quite admired anyone else. He likes Kalasin’s quick mind, her willingness to do her duty, the sacrifices she’s made.
And in turn, Kalasin likes the man who understands her in a way her father can’t. He understands what it’s like to make sacrifices, what it’s like to do your duty even if you hate it. She’s learned a lot from him.
“Check,” Wyldon says.
Kalasin leans forward, hands resting on her knees, blue eyes narrowed as she looks for a move. Getting out of check, she swiftly takes Wyldon’s priest.
He moves again; she moves one of her few remaining pawns to an empty space on his side of the board.
“What do you want for it?” he asks. “You can trade in the pawn for another piece.”
Kalasin looks at him, eyes solemn. All of a sudden, she looks a lot older than eleven years, and she speaks like a battle hardened woman. “I want to trade my pawn for a queen.”

Lovely. I'm always so bad at chess though... If I remember correctly, though I'm probably wrong- but I always thought that checkmate ended the game and check was when you could end the game because you have a chance to get the king?

I love the character interaction here. It's a surprise, at the end, to find out Kalasin is so young -- but that fits her, too.

Oooh, thanks for picking up on that Snow, I've fixed it.
I always remember being so shocked in Wild Magic to find out that she was 9- she seemed very old for her age. Being a princess would do that to you though.

This chess analogy is really very clever. Loving it!
