Title: Balor's Needle
Rating: PG
Word Count: 283
Pairing: Kalasin/Wyldon
Fight: 1/C
Summary: Wyldon finds Kalasin on Balor's Needle. A series where Wyldon and Kalasin struggle with the idea of duty.
When Wyldon reaches the top of Balor’s Needle, he is surprised to find Kalasin, the eldest princess, leaning over the railing, dark hair blowing in the wind. He is even more surprised to find that she isn’t crying, but merely staring over Corus.
“Your highness,” he says, making his presence known.
“Kalasin,” she says firmly. “If you aren’t to be my training master, I see no reason why you can’t call me Kalasin.”
Wyldon is a little bit surprised, but he goes to lean over on the railing next to her. “You’re a lot braver then I thought you were,” he comments.
“Why?”
Wyldon pauses, unsure of how to explain. “When you handed in your papers to train as a page, you were just another noble who was going to follow their dreams, going to do what they want.” Kalasin looks at him, interested. “When you gave it up- that was truly brave.”
Kalasin shakes her head. “Giving up anything isn’t brave,” she says, with all the sureness of a nine year old.
“You gave up your dream to serve your people and your country,” Wyldon comments. “You chose the life other people needed you to live over the one you wanted. You put your own personal desires back so you could look at the millions of people who depend on your family. You made a sacrifice that many grown men couldn’t make.”
“Oh,” Kalasin whispers softly.
“And for what it’s worth,” Wyldon says, kneeling down so he is the same level as the tiny princess. “No matter who you marry, your highness, I think anyone who could make this sort of sacrifice at the age of nine will be a brilliant queen.”
