Summary: Wyldon wants Kalasin to speak to her father. A series where Wyldon and Kalasin struggle with the idea of duty.
His morning rides and evening chess games with Kalasin have become one of Wyldon’s favourite moments of his day. Sometimes he catches the queen eyeing him with a look that is suspicion mixed with appreciation; sometimes the king eyes him with a look that is not a king’s, but a hurt father’s.
“You should talk to your father more,” Wyldon tells Kalasin one evening.
“Yes, sir,” Kalasin says nonchalantly.
“Kalasin,” Wyldon says, a warning tone in his voice. She looks down. “Your father loves you.”
“I’m sure he does, sir,” Kalasin mutters, still looking at her lap. “But I have nothing to say to him.”
“That’s not fair, and you know it.”
Kalasin looks up. “What am I supposed to tell him? ‘You ruined my life?’ Or perhaps I could tell him ‘I’m so happy your life turned out perfectly, but mine isn’t.’ Silence is easier.”
“Kalasin, please speak to your father. He loves you. And he’s doing the best that he knows how. You can’t fault him for that,” says Wyldon.
“Yes, sir. I’ll speak to him.”
