Title: Military Furlough (7) Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 170 Pairing: Maura/Kel Fight: 3/B Summary: There’s a reason she’s been so alone. (warning: character death referenced)
“After Douglass…” Maura paused, crossing to her desk to pick up a small, worn stuffed bear. “The king sends notes to make sure I’m doing well. But I’m too old to warrant an assigned companion. Protector. Either describes what he was to me.”
Kel didn’t know what to say. She had never lost someone that close to her.
“This is Lord Theodore” Maura said, showing him to her lover. “Douglass left him with me when he was on missions. It seems like such a little thing, but it’s a comfort to me.”
“I have trinket and tokens,” Kel began. “They belonged to the people I lost at Haven. They sit in my trunks, taking up room – but I know that if I get rid of them, I’ll regret it. We can move on, but part of our hearts will stay with them.”
Maura returned to Kel, leaning her head against her shoulder. “We put one foot in front of the other and try to cry a little less each day.”

Thank you. Given all that's happened since writing this one, I think it's one I should keep rereading. I'm glad you're moved by it!
