Summary: Gary and Raoul, a party, and a contest to see who can embarrass the other more.
“We were never this young,” Gary muses as he sips his juice. “Never.”
Raoul laughs. “I've been telling you that for a long time.” He watches the dancers twirl past. Nearby, he catches Kel with a burly knight he doesn't know and raises his glass to her.
Gary smiles. “That girl of yours is setting the world on fire, you know. Someone will probably come to me in a snit tomorrow about the impropriety of knights dancing together, as if that alone will be what collapses Tortall.”
“Oh, she's not mine; she's entirely her own.” Still, he grins proudly before leaning over to whisper in Gary's ear, “If only they knew.”
Gary is well-practiced enough not to blush, but it's a near thing. “And it's a good thing they don't know, or else I'd have a line of dirty old men trying to get me out of the way so that they can have you.”
Raoul turns bright red. “You would not.”
Gary smirks. “You don't know the older generation like I do. I've seen them looking at you, wondering if they can get you back behind those curtains.”
“Stop it,” Raoul whines. “You are evil. Did you know that? Evil.”
“They dream about you. I can see it in their eyes.”
“If you do not stop right now,” Raoul hisses, “you will be very alone in a very cold bed.”
Gary starts to reply, but he sees the stern look in Raoul's eyes and thinks better of it. “You started it,” he grumbles.
“You could end it,” Raoul suggests. “Just...probably not behind the curtains. I hear there are unsavory fellows there.”
