Title: Pillars of Sand (Steadfast #1)
Rating: G
Word Count: 305
Pairing: Gary/Raoul – Team Moustache Curtains
Round/Fight: 1E
Summary: AU. Alanna had her shield taken away, and Gary is appointed King’s Champion.
Raoul finds him sulking in his rooms, the shutters drawn down and the shadows boxing him in.
“I’m not sulking,” says Gary. The look on his face betrays him though, a mix of disappointment and frustration.
The shutters give him some difficulty, but Raoul eventually manages to get them open. He squints against the brightness of the morning sun. “I thought you’d be happier.”
Gary laughs sourly. “What’s there to be happy about? Alan – Alanna – is gone, Alex is facing the noose -”
“Gary -”
“- and I know Jon only chose me because I was his third choice. Third. And I’m supposed to just take up my sword and say yes, like there’s nothing wrong?”
It was hard, seeing him like this. This bitter young man wasn’t the friend Raoul knew. It scared him, when war and giants and spidrens couldn’t, and he hated that he didn’t know what to say.
“My father was Champion,” Gary says suddenly. His head is in his hands, his voice dry. “Once, I’d have wanted the same, to follow in his footsteps.”
Raoul shifts uncomfortably where he stands. He doesn’t think that Duke Gareth would ever try and influence Jon’s decision, but he understands what Gary must be thinking; he had always trusted his friends and family, and doubting them—doubting their intentions—must be tearing him apart.
For a moment, Raoul hesitates, then walks over and sits beside him on the bed. He rests his hand on Gary’s shoulder, ignoring the minute flinch beneath his palm. There’s nothing he can say to comfort the young knight, or, at least, nothing he knows how to put into words. Despite what Gary is feeling, though, Raoul knows him well enough to know that he’ll accept. He takes duty seriously, and that makes Raoul’s heart ache for him even more.
