Title: Reading
Rating: G
Word Count: 287
Pairing: Gary/Raoul – Team Moustache Curtains
Round/Fight: 2C
Summary: Gary is trying to read. Raoul has other ideas.
Author's Note: The first of my series inspired by/based on the song "If You Were Gay," from Avenue Q. I'm calling it the Subjunctive Series because "if you were" is one of the few linguistic constructions remaining in English that utilizes the subjunctive tense and I'm a nerd like that. Each one will start with quotes, though the first few are actually dialog rather than lyrics.

ROD
Aah, an afternoon alone with my favorite book, "Broadway Musicals of the 1940s." No roommate to bother me. How could it get any better than this?
NICKY
Oh,hi Rod!
ROD
Hi Nicky.
In the maze of the Palace, it was easy enough to find out-of-the-way courtyards, small green havens few but the staff frequented. Gary had his favorite, a circular yard where the stone gave way to blue sky. There was an apple tree, covered with delicate pink-white flowers in this glorious early spring, which was sturdy enough to climb. He perched on the top branches, basking in the sun, carefully balancing a stack of books.
He pulled out the first tome, A History of Tortallan Fashion, and sighed happily. No one bothered him here.
“Hi Gary!”
He would know that booming voice, with its unstudied enthusiasm, anywhere. “Hi Raoul.” Silently praying that acknowledgment was enough, he turned to the first page.
The tree shook as his large friend hoisted himself onto the lower branches. “What are you doing?”
“Reading.” Really, Gary loved Raoul like a brother, but just as siblings had the tendency to become an annoyance, his fellow squire sometimes irritated him.
“Mithros, don't you ever take a break from work?” The other boy laughed, climbing higher and settling himself beside his lanky companion.
Gary closed his eyes and counted to ten. “It's not work. I'm reading for fun.”
“For fun?”
“That's what I said.”
“Gods, you are insane.” Raoul's smile was warm and bright, and Gary thanked Mithros for it, because were it not for those obvious good intentions, his temper would certainly get the better of him. “Got anything I would like?”
Gary glanced at the pile. Minstrels, Maids, and Songs of Love; Cross-Dressing in the Players: A Brief History; The Ballad of Sir Gaylord of Nond . . .
“I sincerely doubt it.”
