Title: Fatherhood
Rating: G
Word Count: 404
Pairing: Gary/Raoul – Team Moustache Curtains
Round/Fight: 2/C
Summary: Gary asks Raoul to be his son's gods-father.
Raoul stared at the tiny thing. How strange that he could be so awed by something so small. He reached out a timid finger to rub the baby’s belly. It felt soft, and it burbled at his touch.
“He must like you. He cried his head off when Alanna was here this morning.”
Raoul looked at Gary in surprise. “Really?”
“The little guy screamed so loud, he disturbed about a dozen of Numair’s spells, as the man was kind enough to come and inform me.”
Raoul stared at the baby, grateful that it wasn’t screaming now. “What are you going to call him?”
“Gilmyn.”
Raoul cast Gary a sly glance. “Not ‘Raoul’?”
“I suggested it, actually, but Cythera vetoed. A little baby Raoul would have been nice.”
“I was only joking.” Raoul thought a little baby ‘Gary’ would have been nice. He was overwhelmed to notice how much Gary there was in his son.
“Actually Raoul, I wanted to ask you something.”
“Mmm?” Raoul tickled the baby’s toes and smiled.
“I was wondering if you’d be his Gods-father?”
Raoul turned to stare at Gary. “Me? Gods-father?”
“Would you like to?”
“I…wouldn’t Jon be better?”
“He can have the next one. I want you to have this one.”
“The first born…” Raoul looked back at the baby, and his hand trembled slightly. It looked so fragile. Could he really take care of it? What if he sat on it? Or dropped it, or, well, he could do so many wrong things. A squad of not-quite-grown soldiers he could father, but little Gilmyn…
“You’d make a wonderful Gods-father. Please say you’ll do it.”
Raoul was touched at the earnest hope and belief in Gary’s voice. If Gary believed he could do it, then he had to at least try. “I’d be honoured to be his Gods-father. Thank you for asking me.”
“Thank you for accepting. He’ll love you.”
“I think I love him already.” They looked at the baby, and it was a little while before a slow smile spread across Raoul’s face. “Spawn of Gareth. We had better prepare ourselves for this hellion.”
“May I remind you that I am also spawn of Gareth?” Gary said indignantly.
“Like I said…”
“I didn't turn out that bad, I thank you very much!”
“You have mellowed, but cast your mind back.”
Gary did this, and an air of terror gradually permeated his face, nay, his very spirit.
