Title: Champion Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 144 words Pairing: Neal/Owen Round/Fight: 1/E Summary: Neal feels regret at being named Champion. Warning for alcohol consumption and references to character death.
“Kel would have been Champion,” Neal says. Owen can hear the slur in his voice from the alcohol. “She would have supported Roald and dealt with every jumped-up lack-wit who thinks they should be on the Council. She probably would have worn that bloody polite smile the whole time, too.”
Owen reaches across, trying to tug the glass from his friend’s hand. “She would have been proud of you,” he says gently. Neal grips the glass, but Owen is sober and persists. “C’mon Neal, you have had enough.” Finally, he pulls the glass clean out of Neal’s hands and places it across the table, out of his reach.
“She would have been better than me,” Neal whispers, clenching his hands. “I miss her,” he adds, almost to quietly to hear.
Owen leans over, and pats his friend on the back. “I miss her too.”

Neal’s is too hard on himself, I’m sure he’ll make a wonderful Champion. And I adore supportive grown up Owen.

Aww, this made me tear up. I can see Neal and Owen having this conversation if Kel did die.
