Title: Pieces
Rating: PG
Word Count: 315
Pairing: Gary/Raoul – Team Moustache Curtains
Round/Fight: 2/C
Summary: I’m falling to pieces. They’re tired, all of them, but that’s not an excuse. All of them are just pieces, just falling to pieces. Breakeven part 18, set post-Lioness Rampant.
“Can it wait?” Jon’s voice is tired as he looks up at her from a table in their private rooms, and part of Thayet wants to apologize, to go and leave him to his work, to sit and watch as her husband silently pores over papers until the darkest part of the night for yet another night.
“No; its about Gary and Raoul.” The best way to get his attention now is to be blunt, and Jon blinks, alert now as she walks further into his impromptu study.
“What about them?” Jon asks, but there’s a note hidden in his tone of voice that maybe he already knows what she’s going to say.
“Haven’t you noticed them at all?” Thayet asks, the words harsher than she would have wished, but they still hang in the air. “Gary’s never outside of his office, and Raoul spends his time in a drunken stupor—“
“Gary’s the Prime Minister of a country in shambles, and both of them are grown men.”
Thayet’s eyes widen as the argument that she’s heard from everyone else comes out of Jon’s mouth.
“So, its alright for Gary to become a workaholic, for him to throw away every chance at happiness with Cythera—“ and here Jon’s expression changes, becomes pained, “—yes, that’s what’s happening Jon, and you’re letting it!”
“Thayet, I can’t fix everything, I’m just one man, and there’s all of Tortall to think of—“
“So its alright to sit back and forget about your friends, then, Jon?”
Something in Jonathan crumples then. “I didn’t mean—I just…”
Thayet finds it incredibly hard to remain angry at him when he’s like this, but manages one last: “If you can’t manage it yourself, get someone who can. Talk to Myles, get Alanna back, get George…”
She lets him pull her into his arms.
“None of us can do this alone.”
