At the house on Cheeseman Street, Tris finished putting jam on bread and placed it on the table. She walked over to the counter to slice fruit, then groaned when she looked out the window.
Briar was leaning against the front gate with a girl pressed against his body, kissing him wildly.
Tris wondered why they couldn’t just keep that to Briar’s room. Briar said they were “quick goodbye kisses”, but Tris didn’t think they were quick at all.
But it’s not like I would know, she thought. I haven’t had any experience with that.
Tris sighed and tried to push the feeling of inadequacy aside. She didn’t understand why her lack of kissing experience was becoming important to her lately. Perhaps it was because there was so much romance in the court at Namorn, and she hadn’t experienced any of it. Perhaps it was because she was going away to Lightsbridge, where she would be surrounded by students her own age, and plenty of them would be male. Perhaps it was simply because Briar made kissing look like so much fun.
Tris was half way through slicing the fruit when Sandry came downstairs. She hadn’t gone back to the palace last night after staying up late to talk to Daja about silver buttons for a new gown. Now, the noblewoman yawned, looked out the window, and frowned.
“Ugh, look at them!” she said.
Tris shrugged. She was no longer feeling disgusted when she happened to catch Briar entwined with one of the girls he brought home. Instead, she was feeling curiosity and--much to her embarrassment--jealousy.
I wish I knew what it was like to be kissed like that!
“Aw, Tris.”
“I hadn’t meant to project that thought,” the redhead grumbled. Then she thought for a moment.
“But I do wonder.”
Tris didn’t meet Sandry’s eyes. She didn’t want to see either the sympathetic or knowing look that may be there. Tris knew her siblings had been kissed and she had not, but she still didn’t want any pity.
“Hmmm,” Sandry said, interrupting Tris’s thoughts. “Well, kissing is…well, it’s...I guess it’s hard to explain.”
She finished lamely and gave Tris an apologetic smile. Tris just shrugged and went back to chopping the fruit. She supposed it must be hard to describe, or one of the many books she’d read would have done a better job at explaining it.
Sandry looked frustrated. Tris could see her brow furrowed as she tried to gather her thoughts. She would open her mouth to speak, then shut it again, unable to articulate anything. This bothered Tris even more. It was bad enough for her to feel ignorant about something, but it was worse to feel like there was no way for it to be explained.
Worst of all, Tris realized she had gotten Sandry stuck on the subject.
“Daja!” Sandry pounced on their foster sister when she walked into the kitchen.
“How would you describe what it’s like to be kissed?”
“Good morning to you too!” Daja said. “I don’t know…it’s…it’s…why do I have to describe kissing?”
“You don’t,” Tris said, as she felt herself blush.
“Tris wanted to know what it feels like-
“And Sandry is taking an idle comment too seriously!” Tris said. Sandry glared at her, but Daja just shook her head at her sisters and smiled.
“Well, whatever the reason, I can’t really help much,” Daja said. “I can’t describe it. It’s something you have to feel.”
She crossed over to the kitchen counter and grabbed the plates of fruit to put on the table.
“Maybe you should ask Briar,” she said, as she looked out the window and scowled. “He seems to do plenty of it.”
