Title: More Than I Could Rating: G Wordcount: 193 Pairing: Crane/Rosethorn Round: 1/F Summary: Rosethorn has begun a relationship with Lark.
She will love you more than I could; she who dares to stand where I stood. Where I Stood, Missy Higgins.
Crane ran a finger along the waxy leaf of a southern cactus and waited for the pain to come. He knew, inside, that she wasn’t his anymore, though she had never been his in a way anyone in his family would have ever understood. But it had worked, at least for him. He had been happy with all of her sharp edges and her temper and the biting impatience because it came hand in hand with all the softness and warmth and passion he had seen in her when no one else did.
Now, someone else did. He hadn’t ever spoken to this Dedicate Lark, but he knew of her. He wouldn’t have believed someone so soft spoken and temperate could survive Rosethorn, let alone love her, but he was wrong. Because something in that woman had softened the Rosethorn he knew. She didn’t have to put up with the temper to get the passion, or the sharp edges for the softness the way he had had to.
He wondered if Rosethorn loved her more than she had loved him.
Crane sat in the earth of his greenhouse as the pain came.

And that IS the difference, I think. Beautifully phrased. Though I'd never thought, at the begining of this round, that I'd end up wanting to hug Crane as much as I have
