Title: That's Exactly How This Grace Thing Works Rating: PG Wordcount: 116 Pairing: Crane/Rosethorn Round: 1/F Summary: Changing the name does not change the man.
Crane was intended to be a blank slate, a name where Isas would exist no longer. He had intended to give everything up to take his vows, to become this new person.
He had this vision of Crane as a perfect dedicate, that somehow all the anger in him would be gone and he could miraculously get along with all of these very stupid people. He thought he would rid himself of the things that made NivaRosethorn snap at him with hate in her eyes, not humor. He wanted her to love him. He thought she could love Crane.
But it was all still there, all still inside of him, this heavy burden to carry alone.

Oh, this is lovely! It's so naive in a very poignant way, and makes a lot of sense to me. Wonderful.

Poor boy. I love the idea that Crane, as successful as a first dedicate as we presume he was as a noble and academic, originally took vows to escape himself...which is, of course, impossible.

I love the theme. Crane's crushed dreams, and the idea that you can't really escape from yourself. This is a brilliant study of Crane's character.

Crane's experience pre-series is hardly written about, so it's great to see this little bit of character development from him. That feeling of things magically changing once you're a certain age or have done a certain thing is all too familiar.
