Summary: Crane, after Briar is the hero of the day in Briar's Book.
“I killed you,” he whispers into her neck. She rolls her eyes, which is about all she has it in her to do. “I did. I could have worked faster. And then...and then.....”
“And then,” she croaks, “you did the only thing that was rationally possible to do. Don't beat yourself up over a little boy. He's more insane than you are. That's not a title you actually want.”
He sighs against her. “He loved you more.”
She reaches a hand out to touch his arm. “It's not a competition. It was just that you knew you could go on without me. He didn't think he could. It's not a question of degree.”
Protests would be useless. It is true. It would be dark, it would be unimaginably horrid, but he could go on.
He's very very glad he doesn't have to.
