Alanna cannot help that she has always admired the Duke of Conte, even though she knows in her heart that he is a foul, conniving blackguard she should be attempting to defeat. She cannot help that she is attracted to him (and only from afar-- she will not permit herself to get closer) just like she is attracted to his cousin. It is perhaps the Conte curse of the Conte charm: all women fall at their feet, seduced by dark hair and bright blue eyes.
At least with Roger she can tell herself that becoming close with him involves treason. She can make herself immune to his smile and his offbeat humor. After all, it doesn't do to romanticize the villain.
